Conventions of Music Videos and example.
Camera shots:
Music videos tend to include many long shots, close ups and mid shots. This is to create emphasis on the artist, location and emotions. Also, close ups are used not only to show emotions but to reflect the words of the song with the movement of the lips of the artist.
Camera Movement:
The movement of the camera is used to follow and trace artist or and. Camera movements include tilts, pans tracking and crane shots.
Mise-en-scene:
This refers to the arrangement of performers and props on stage or in a scene for a production of a music video or any other media text. Mise-en-scene puts importance on the representation of something. An example is, ‘All of the lights’ by Kanye West featuring Rihanna and Kid Cudi. The mise-en scene involves a young girl walking around outside alone and it is in black and white which is a contrast to the main artists as their scenes are in colour. This reflects the isolation the main artist Kanye West feels from his daughter. The young girl also looks cold and her scenes are set outside where the mise en scene is a place full of snow. This may portray that Kanye West feels cold without his daughter. The props in the video are the bright & dark clothes the other artists in the music video this represents that this is a vigorous and angry song. Similarly, the natural lighting is dark but which represents the annoyed and angry mood but then bright lights are added which illustrates that this is an energetic song.

Editing:
Jump cuts are the predominant editing technique used in music video. This is because this allows sudden change from one scene to another. Similarly, transitions such as fade and dissolve are very common in music videos as they create a different effect to cuts. In the Kanye West ‘All of the Lights’ text was edited into the music video. A reason this was done was to show different types of lights as that is what the name of the song is and to also present the range of emotions the main artist is going through. As 'All Of The Lights' is the heading of the song the theme in this music video is lights and we see bright flashing lights recurring throughout the video clip.

Music video conventions 2nd Example
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uSRE8aTy5GE&ob=av2n
This music video by Estelle ‘Come over’ ft Sean Paul is a narrative that portrays a woman who wants her boyfriend to come over. The video is not a live video and this may be because the song has not got a lot of an emotion to it. Another reason the video is not live is because the song tells a vivid story and making the music video a narrative is perhaps the easiest choice for a music video. This music video has cuts to the beat which is a common convention for music videos. Fish eye lenses were cleverly used at some stages of the video.
A reason that the fish eye effect might have been used is because the message of the song is that the woman wants the man to come over and she is looking through her door whole waiting for him. This effect was cleverly used as the audience can see what is going on through the main singer’s point of view as she waits at the door. This video mise en scene is a main aspect in this video and the narrative is set up with people in a building which may be an apartment or a hotel and the main singers in the video. The scenes also overlap from a narrative her singing in a TV studio with Sean Paul, to her singing in a room, and then her with Sean Paul. The scenes then overlap to her at a party at the later stages of the music video. The emotion in the song is calm and peaceful, this is shown by the way the main characters in the video Estelle and Sean Paul walk around and dance.

Digipak design
In my A2 media course we are producing our own music video and we also have to make a Digipak which will contain a CD of the music video. A Digipak is a case that is made from paperboard. Unlike a plastic CD case a Digipak folds like a book. A Digipak has a ‘Head Front Panel’, ‘Inner Panel’, ‘Inner Panel 2’, ‘CD Tray’, ‘Fold in Panel’ and the ‘Back of Package’. These Digipak’s usually consists of one or more plastic trays capable of holding CD's or DVD's.
The song that I originally chose for my music video was ‘Fading’ by Rihanna. The song is about love fading away. I decided to change my song because I had better idea’s for my new song, which is called ‘Love me’ by a well known British- born Nigerian singer Tiwa Savage. My teacher also encouraged me to do this song as it was not too mainstream and felt that I could be more original with this song. The song is about a rollercoaster relationship, and a girl wanting to be more loved by her boyfriend. Consequently I decided that on the Head Front Panel of my Digipak I am going to have an image of a string spelt out as ‘Love me’ and a heart.
The colours I used are vibrant which highlights that it is an upbeat song and the video is going to have a lot of vibrant colours.
In the Inner Panel is going to contain a list of the producers of the song and video. It is also going have a list of people in the music video. The text I am using for my list is going to be from ‘dafont’.com’

The Inner Panel 2 is going to contain image of the main singer in the music video; this image is going to be faded. I am going to use Photoshop which is the leading digital image editing application for the Internet, print, and other new media disciplines. The reason why I am going to use Photoshop is because the tools that it has will enable me to edit my picture to full effect.
The CD tray is going to contain the CD of the music video which is going to have the same image as the Head Front Panel, however it is faded and I am going to use Photoshop’s tools again to fade the image. On the Fold in Panel is going to have the same image which is going to be on the CD and some of the track list is going to be on it. On the back of the package is going to have the rest of the track list, I am going to use the internet to find a creative website which contain theme fonts that I can use for my Digipak.
Overall the theme for my Digipak is going to be vibrant and also about love, and I am going to show this through my imagery. I am also going to present the theme of “love” through my choice of font.
